The energy harvesting segment is too be further serviced by Avnet Memec with a recent pan European distribution agreement. The distributor has signed the agreement with US-based Infinite Power Solutions, Inc. (IPS); a manufacturer of solid-state batteries.

Energy harvesting, though having been intermittently in press over the past few years is still currently a niche market, with spending of $700M in 2011. However, experts from IDTechEx estimate this market will grow worldwide to $4.37 billion by 2020.

But with eco-friendly devices such as the 4V THINERGY Micro Energy Cells (MECs) from IPS presenting a potentially important component, the success of energy harvesting solutions of the future are being driven forward as they reduce the cost of new applications.

An interesting aspect of the devices is that they are paper-thin cells featuring one of the most powerful batteries for their size. They can be embedded into the system, are lifetime rechargeable and are said to never need replacing.

Also with close to zero leakage, MECs are possibly the most efficient storage solution available and so are ideal for energy harvesting applications.
