Available from specialist distributor Switchtec, a power relay by industry leading manufacturer Hongfa enables the safe storage of electric vehicles without battery drain and also the prevention of fire in the event of an accident.

Modern electric vehicles consume battery power even when the ignition is off. The HVF12 relay allows complete battery isolation for vehicle manufacturers, preventing battery drain, and enabling the vehicle to start after long periods of no use. The relay is also used to disconnect the battery in the event of an accident to prevent fire as a result of possible short circuits.

The HFV12 has a single pole normally open (N/O) contact and is capable of switching a massive 190A at 16VDC. The relay also has an impressive inrush current withstand capability with ratings of 1500A for 0.2s or 1000A for 1s. The HFV12 is a latching relay, where the coil is pulsed to turn on and similarly, pulsed to turn it off. As such, the relay does not need constant coil power, and is therefore very energy efficient and in battery operated situations will not further drain the battery once operated.

The HFV12 is fitted with a four pin, automotive style connector (AMP 0.070 Series) for a secure and quick fit. For mounting, the HFV12 is fitted with a metal bracket for direct surface mounting on a bulkhead or similar surface.

As the HFV12 was designed for arduous automotive use, its specification is high and thus it is very transferable for use in other applications. For example, it features an excellent -40 to +120 degrees C ambient temperature rating. It is IP54 sealed, 22HZ to 500HZ 98m/s2 vibration resistance, and 392m/s2 shock resistance. All excellent figures for use in applications where a rugged, reliable, low power consumption, high switching capability relay may be required.

Such applications include mobility vehicles, waste collection vehicles, the caravan and trailer industry, motor control and battery disconnect apps, and high amperage low voltage switching. Accordingly, this versatile, very ‘green’ relay will find favour with those in the automotive industry, OEMs, equipment manufacturers, panel manufacturers/builders, energy management systems, battery systems, and UPS manufacturers.

With over 40 automotive relays types, and an ever-expanding range, Hongfa offers a complete automotive relay catalogue. Major customers of Hongfa include Ford, Fiat, Delphi, Chery & Jiangling Motor Company. Hongfa has a design and production facility dedicated to automotive relays. It is equipped with the latest moulding, assembly and production technologies. Hongfa also has its own internal test house, which is recognised by TUV, VDE, UL and CNAS, enabling it to complete in-house testing to higher standards, shortening approval lead times and allowing for increased production flexibility. Hongfa is the largest relay manufacturer in China, with a 700 million piece manufacturing capacity for relays alone. Hongfa, appreciating the importance of the worldwide automotive industry were the first relay manufacturer to achieve the automotive standard ISO/TS16949.

All Hongfa automotive relays are RoHS and ELV compliant and are manufactured under an ISO/TS16949 approved system.

Switchtec’s ‘wire-to-wire’ connector DIN mounts, combining speed of connectivity and durability

Available from specialist distributor Switchtec, Euroclamp’s SVR-DR terminal blocks are – somewhat uniquely – DIN mountable, meeting the needs of many panel builders and OEMs. The terminal blocks enable quick, ‘plug-in’ connections to be made that are simultaneously solid and vibration free, mounted on DIN rail.

Whilst there are many manufacturers of plug in terminal blocks, most are not DIN mountable, alternatively they are DIN rail mount mountable, but not plug in. Accordingly, Euroclamp’s ‘vertical reversed’ SVR-DR has found a niche market in electronic housings and enclosure equipment manufacturers who required a wire-to-wire connection via a DIN rail mounted terminal block.

Offering compatibility and familiarity, the SVR-DR is designed to be plugged into Euroclamp’s SF plug in connector. The SF has an inverted mounting system that has male contacts thus allowing the SF to connect directly and easily to the SVR-SR, providing the wire-to-wire connection. The SVR-DR can also be plugged into Euroclamp’s PV PCB connector if a PCB connection is needed. An EN60335 (glow wire) version also available.

SVR-DR’s DIN foot can be fitted to DIN rail of the following sizes, 35 x 7.5mm, 35 x 15mm and onto DIN 32 and DIN 15 rail. The terminal block is available in sizes from 2 to 24 poles and will accept 4sq mm solid and 2.5sq mm stranded wire.

With its detachable foot element for mounting onto DIN rail, Euroclamp’s SVR-DR sits alongside two sister SVR models, the standard flangeless model for surface mounting, and a model that has a flange at each end for surface mounting with screws.

The SVR series is CE marked, cULus approved and is fully RoHS compliant. CSA and VDE approvals are pending.

For safety, and unlike some other versions available on the market, the SVR-DR’s plug in connectors’ metal contacts are set back into the plastic body of the terminal block. This completely insulates the connector from the metal DIN rail onto which it is mounted.

The SVR is available as standard in green, but as with all Euroclamp’s terminal blocks they are also available in red, yellow, blue, orange and black. Other, special colours are available upon request.

The SVR connector is an important ‘enabling product’ in the Euroclamp connector range, and whilst its application is mainly for use inside electronic housings and enclosures for several key industrial areas, it can also be adapted for use in building automation housings.
