An LED-downlight reference design has been released by Power Integrations. The new circuit is for the company’s LYTSwitch IC family of devices.

The company advises its RDR-347 12W reference design, based on the LYT4313E, delivers a power factor greater than 0.95 and can reduce total harmonic distortion (THD) to less than 10 percent, which meets EN61000-3-2C requirements.

Efficiency is said to be greater than 86 percent at 120VAC. This performance is enabled in part because of the ICs used in this design as they are combined in one PFC and CC power conversion stage, which can minimise losses and cut component count, reducing costs and time to market in effect.

TRIAC dimming is known to have its challenges, especially deep-dimming where TRIAC asymmetry between half-cycles can have a significant effect. The use of the company’s ICs  in this design are said to create system start-up without noticeable hysteresis (so-called ‘pop-on effect’), even in deep-dimming.

These ICs are packed with features including, a very fast start-up time (under 500ms) even when dimmed to 10 percent output current, achieving the ‘instant-on’ condition.

This reference design is available for download to users via the company’s website.
