An Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) product family has been introduced by Everlight Electronics Co., Ltd. The devices are aimed at power management for display backlighting in portable applications, such as mobile phones, notebooks and PDAs.
The ALS devices combine a photodiode and a current amplifier IC in one package. This saves power for backlighting displays in mobile appliances by adjusting the backlight brightness depending on the ambient light. To ensure accurate measurement, the spectral response of the ambient light sensor corresponds to that of the human eye.
The ALS’ are current output types, which offer high output linearity across a wide illumination range and a low sensitivity variation across light sources.
They can be operated within a supply voltage range from 1.8V to 5.5V and in a temperature range from -40°C up to 85°C. The family is RoHS compliant, Pb Free and halogen-free.
The ALS can also be used in computing and consumer devices, automatic residential and commercial management, such as, in-and-outdoor light control and automatic contrast enhancement for electronics.
