Lightning-fast Linux development with ByteSnap SnapUI user interface platform

ByteSnap’s award-wining SnapUI user interface framework will be on show. Rewritten from the ground up, this new design is focused on supporting the iMX6 processor to leverage graphical performance, whilst including core features that have made SnapUI so successful for end customers.

ByteSnap has concentrated on Linux support for this new release of SnapUI, its application development toolkit for embedded systems. Now Linux developers can create interfaces that meet user expectations for great-looking apps in industrial and other business settings.

“ByteSnap Design has a growing portfolio of clients who prefer to use embedded Linux for their design projects,” says Director Graeme Wintle. “For this new release of SnapUI, we’ve gone back to the drawing board, really focusing on what has made SnapUI so successful – applying these core features to a new Linux-only OpenGL implementation. We are certain that the flexibility of development and focus on our customers’ end goals using this is even stronger now.”

The original SnapUI product offers rapid prototyping on Windows embedded systems.  Now, this new Linux-only version supports an optimised OpenGL engine.

Samples of successful projects in 2015

ByteSnap has worked on a number of successful embedded electronics device projects in 2015 including:

Next Generation Multimedia Passenger Information Display

ByteSnap used ARM-based, low power design to develop transformative software that displayed multimedia content on larger, higher resolution panels. The result: exceptional visual displays for passengers, with a framework that allows rapid development when scrolling images and messages, on one or two monitors simultaneously.

RFID assisted selling platform

ByteSnap designed an embedded systems solution to redefine self-service kiosks to complement tablet-based ‘assisted selling’ platforms, such as Apple & IBM’s Sales Assist, which place live product information, inventory and customer history in the hands of staff as they move around the store. The design features a discreet contact charging dock to display and secure tablets. When a customer needs help, store assistants simply tap and go, using their RFID fob.

Automotive logistics app

ByteSnap developed an app to track vehicle distribution in the UK, from compound to final destination with a real time link to a major automaker’s SAP system. This enabled the client to automate paper-based manual services used by its import centre, allowing real time actions to be performed on the automaker’s enterprise system.

Due to its success over 2015, the team also welcomed a new team member in January, and aims to continue its growth in 2016 and beyond.

Pre-compliance EMC testing

ByteSnap offers an EMC Testing service, to test products’ pre-compliance and remove any problems prior to formal testing. By investing in its own testing chamber, ByteSnap can identify and fix any issues prior to external testing – so de-risking a project and resulting in significant cost and time savings over a project lifetime.

Thanks to this new service, and ByteSnap’s commitment to customer care, the consultancy achieved its globally recognised ISO 9001 quality mark in February.

On the right track with LoRa for the rail industry

ByteSnap expanded into the rail industry in 2015, unveiling a high-reliability, low-power remote monitoring system at its Railtex 2015 debut, alongside highlighting hardware and software design work for electronic display manufacturer Infotec’s new range of LCD/TFT panels.

Accreditations and Awards

ISO 9001:2008 certified, ByteSnap Design is an NXP Partner and an ARM Connected Community Partner. The team’s experience ranges from electronic design through to BSP porting and mobile app development.

In 2015, ByteSnap was also shortlisted for two prestigious industry awards: Consultancy of the Year at BEEAS and Design Team of the Year at the Elektras. ByteSnap Design won Consultancy of the Year in 2013 at the British Engineering Excellence Awards (BEEA) and was ‘Highly Commended’ for design work on electric vehicle charging posts for the London 2012 Olympic Games at the BEEA 2012. The team also won ‘European Design Team of the Year’ 2011 in the Elektra awards.

The consultancy also has experience of electronic circuit design, microcontroller design, Linux and embedded software development, designing hardware products from wireless sensors to ruggedised tablets with multiple software projects such as developing Android BSPs through to video processing applications.
