The Internet of Things has been redlining the hype-o-meter for several years. Choose an analyst for the global economic value figure and it is likely to be somewhere between $1.9 (Gartner) and $14.4 (Cisco) trillion by 2020. It is therefore little wonder that virtually all businesses are eyeing ways in which to take advantage.

“Without security – there is no IoT”

Innovation is rife and many companies are rushing to market with product and service ideas. Some have given scant regard for security – prosecutions are already taking place in the US. This undermines customer confidence and increases resistance to market adoption.

“Security first” must be our mantra
It is not something that can be bolted on or added later – industry must work together:

Why?
The security of IoT systems is complex. Vulnerabilities exist everywhere – in the supply chain, in system provisioning, in operation and at end-of-life. Exploits can happen at any time. We need intelligence everywhere too. Just because your offering is secure today does not mean that it will be secure tomorrow – you need to understand where, how and why your system will be at risk. You need to have a plan to respond as soon as it has been compromised.

The UK is a centre of excellence
The UK has a fine heritage in communications and computing technology plus a rich capability in cyber-security. These national assets should be leveraged for both economic and commercial gain yet the IoT “elements of security” landscape is fragmented, ill-defined and evolving.

This summit shines a light on both opportunity and challenge – bringing together expert insights across the landscape.
