Gowanda Electronics has been designing and manufacturing inductors for the electronics marketplace for over 50 years. Based in the US with a global sales network, the company’s innovative power inductor designs have evolved over the years as applications and technical needs changed in industrial, medical, military and space markets. Design engineers can now select from Gowanda’s many standard power surface mount and power through-hole series to address their need for shielded, unshielded, open construction, molded, high current, high temperature, low profile, dual wound, toroidal, choke, potted, or standoff designs.  Additional flexibility is provided by series that offer horizontal or vertical mounting. Performance parameters for the company’s power inductors are series specific but range from 0.15 µH to 100 mH for inductance, 0.002 to 330 for DCR ohms, and 36 mA to 33.6 A for current rating DC.

SMP1210S Series

Some specific power inductor examples include Gowanda’s SMP1210S and SMP2512. The SMP1210S series combines high current, shielding and small size with inductance values from 1 to 100 µH and current ratings from 0.2 to 1.384 A DC. Gowanda was the first inductor manufacture to introduce a series with this performance and size in response to the design engineer’s two-fold challenge of increasing performance and reducing footprints.

SMP2512 Series

Gowanda’s SMP2512 is a series of surface mount, wirewound, ferrite core, molded power inductors. This series is designed for use in power applications for specific surface mount size (nominally 6 mm L x 2 mm W) and current rating of 0.26 to 1.64 A DC for an inductance range of 1 to 100 µH. These power inductors are epoxy-encapsulated for environmental protection and superior strength to tolerate all types of reflow soldering.

Power inductors from Gowanda are used for a variety of applications including filters for DC/DC converters, switching regulated power supplies and point of load applications in automotive electronics, industrial process control equipment, medical diagnostic equipment and test & measurement equipment. Their molded construction provides designed-in protection to withstand smd soldering and PCB cleaning operations without the need for special attention.

More recently Gowanda developed several “Qualified Products List” power inductor series in order to address the growing need for high performance solutions in military and other demanding applications.

QPL products go through extensive testing for electrical, physical and thermal properties, taking months to complete. Gowanda now offers several QPL surface mount and QPL through-hole power inductor “MLP” series for MIL-PRF-27 requirements.

          QPL MLP “T” Series

Three MLP surface mount series went through additional testing and inspection to attain a higher level standard. Gowanda’s MLP “T” Series now meet MIL-PRF-27 Level T, the highest quality level attainable per the US Department of Defense mil spec MIL-PRF-27 for components used in high-reliability critical military and space applications. Each production lot is subjected to 100% thermal shock, burn-in and radiographic inspection in addition to electrical testing. Gowanda was the first in the industry to offer these Level T components in response to a need conveyed by organizations in the military market for a high-reliability QPL-approved inductor supplier for this demanding mil spec.

Gowanda’s MLP series are designed for power applications in military, space, aerospace and defense communities. This includes use in communication, guidance, and security applications, as well as in radar, test & evaluation and special mission applications. These series are also suitable for use in non-military high reliability (hi-rel) or high risk applications that warrant a thoroughly tested inductor coil.

         Environmental Testing Lab

To support its QPL, high-reliability and upscreening efforts, the company chose to invest in instrumentation and equipment to enable environmental testing to be done in-house. This gives Gowanda control over the testing process, to assure projects stay on track. Gowanda continues to expand the capabilities of their testing lab to stay at the forefront of technology. Recent additions include more life test chambers to enhance multiple project capabilities, a thermal cycling chamber to complement existing thermal shock testing, and a 70 GHz Network Analyzer for high frequency RF characterizations.

If a customer application requires more than off-the-shelf product, custom designs can provide the ideal solution. Gowanda’s capabilities such as design services, 3D rapid prototyping, proprietary manufacturing equipment and flexible facilities enable the company to be a virtual member of the customer’s product development team, thereby minimizing time to market.

In addition to power inductors, Gowanda also manufactures broadband conicals, RF components, transformers and application-specific magnetics, with surface mount, thru-hole, custom-OEM and standard configurations. The company offers ER (established reliability), ruggedized, Pb and RoHS products. Development and manufacturing capabilities include custom transfer molding, custom winding, cleanrooms, CNC machines and environmental testing services. Non-magnetic designs are also available for medical and other magnetic-sensitive applications.  ITAR, AS 9100, ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 standards are in place. MIL-STD-981 capabilities enhance Gowanda’s ability to serve the space industry.
