An embedded module that enables low power, serial-to-Wi-Fi networking has been released by Digi International. The device has a common footprint and application programming interface (API) that allows users to create a single board design for wireless products that support 802.15.4, ZigBee, ZigBee Smart Energy, 2.4 GHz, 900 and 868 MHz, Wi-Fi and proprietary DigiMesh protocols.

Ideal for energy management, wireless sensor networks and intelligent asset management, the device offers 802.11 b/g/n networking and flexible SPI and UART serial interfaces.

The module includes the 802.11 b/g/n physical layer, baseband MAC and TCP/IP stack, allowing developers to add Wi-Fi to their products by connecting to the devices’ Wi-Fi’s serial port.

By bridging the low-power/ low-cost requirements of wireless device networking with the infrastructure of 802.11, the device creates new wireless opportunities for energy management, process and factory automation, wireless sensor -networks, intelligent asset ¬management and more.

It focuses on the requirements of these wireless device networks to offer developers using the technology, IP-to-the-device flexibility.
