Proving that the military market is where the money is, ITT Exelis has recently received a $25 million order to provide a wide range of communications equipment to an international customer.  This Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program contract was awarded by the U.S. Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.

The award includes the delivery of the company’s Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS) VHF Base Stations and Vehicular Systems in single and dual radio configurations.

This system is described as providing secure VHF voice and data communications capability to tactical units. It also said to feature in excess of 600,000 radios delivered to date to the United States and more than 30 of its allies.

It also includes Spearhead VHF Handheld Radios, unit and intermediate level spares, installation services and field service representative support.

The company’s Spearhead VHF portable handheld tactical radio is described as providing dismounted soldiers secure, frequency-hopping voice and packet data with integrated GPS in a small, lightweight package that is fully interoperable with the international SINCGARS.

The FMS program is claimed as a government-to-government method for selling U.S. defense equipment, services and training to allied nations.  The award is part of an FMS Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract awarded to the company by CECOM in 2008. To date, Exelis has received approximately $451 million in orders under the IDIQ contract.
